An Iowa City man accused of stealing his own cat from an animal shelter vows to fight the charge. The Iowa City Press-Citizen newspaper says Justin Kaufman was charged with fifth-degree theft on Saturday after he allegedly took his cat, Smokey, from the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center. The cat had gotten loose and was taken to the shelter. According to the criminal complaint, when a shelter employee went to ask a manager about a potential fee, Kaufmann took Smokey from a cage and took him home. The complaint says Kaufman entered a restricted area to get his cat. Kaufman says he'll plead not guilty. Kaufman says Smokey has been sent to live with his sister in Dubuque to avoid any further issues.
