Evidence of mice and cockroaches found in HMP Birmingham kitchens


BOSSES at HMP Birmingham were forced to clean up the jail kitchens or face them being shut down after health chiefs spotted evidence of mice. Council environmental health officers visited the Winson Green prison following a complaint from an inmate about poor hygiene. They found evidence of mice and cockroach infestations in areas used to prepare meals at the Victorian jail, run by private security firm G4S. A rat was also allegedly spotted in an exercise yard. An enforcement notice was issued warning the kitchens would be closed unless immediate improvement action took place – actions which have now been taken.
