Maidstone Prison Riot: Up To 180 Involved

Up to 180 inmates, including many foreign nationals, are rioting at Maidstone Prison, said the Prison Officers Association. Officers from special prison service riot units, known as the tornado team, across the country have been called in, said the trade union. A spokeswoman for the Ministry of Justice said: "I can confirm there is an ongoing incident involving a number of prisoners and national resources have been deployed. It is confined to one wing."Prison Officers Association, Vice Chair, Ralph Valerio, told Sky News negotiators are at the scene in Kent trying to contain the riot in which inmates are smashing up the wing.He said between 160 to 180 foreigners are involved and some staff could have been assaulted but have now retreated to safety.
