Bedford Prison: Inmate killed cell rats during inspection

A prisoner was found to be catching and killing rats in his cell during an inspection at an infested jail, a report has revealed.Inspectors said HMP Bedford had continued to suffer an "inexorable decline" in standards, despite two years of efforts to improve it.Chief Inspector of Prisons Peter Clarke said: "The collapse in standards is as sad as it is inexcusable."

DEMORALISING ACTIVITIES IN PRISON

It is I again. I have read the post about demoralising activities for prisoners and it comes as no surprise.
I remember the Peppa Pig saga when it was in the papers. If you don't remember it, here it is. PEPPA PIG
The problem in prison is that no one has the time to deliver reasonable activities but it doesn't excuse being given baby colouring in pages.
When I was in prison, the only activities we had was chasing dinosaurs and that had nothing to do with a Jurassic Park board game, it was the drugs.
Don't be shocked I have just said that because I won't sugar coat it. It was the truth and it killed the boredom. Prison is boring. There was only so many times I could write to my Mum and sister telling them that the food was crap and that I had been to the gym. Eat, sleep and repeat.
Prison claims that it prepares people for release. It doesn't. It does if you want to go home and watch the CBeebies channel…

It is with deep sadness to inform our readers that one of the most amazing, courageous and wonderful, activists, Sandie Blanton, passed away suddenly on the 11th December 2013.
Many of our supporters here at Prisoners Families Voices truly admired Sandies work and to say she will be sadly missed is an understatement.
I remember messaging Sandie about writing to someone on Texas death row because I hadn't got a clue what was what. Nothing was too much trouble for Sandie and she guided me through the do's, don'ts, if's, buts, and you name it. I followed Sandie's work and wondered how on earth she managed to do what she did, but she was a real trooper with a solid mind and remarkable spirit. Wales has 'highest imprisonment rate' in western Europe

Wales has the highest imprisonment rate in western Europe, new research has claimed.The Wales Governance Centre's analysis of official figures also reveals average custody rates are higher than in England for a number of different groups and offences.In particular, non-white Welsh prisoners are overrepresented in prison.Report author Dr Robert Jones said this was a major cause of concern."Equally disturbing is that such an alarming trend has emerged in Wales without detection," his report concluded."This undoubtedly calls into question the role being played by UK justice agencies in Wales as well as civil society organisations and academic researchers."This is the first time Wales has been analysed separately and Dr Jones said wider research was now needed.
